“Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.”-by Mahatma Gandhi
And for this 68th Independence day, I would like to make this prayer with both heart and words. This is penned down by Sri Rabindra nath tagore in his collection #”Geetanjali”.

p style=”text-align:center;”>Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

One of my favourite poems of Tagore…which still sounds so apt for the nation…

This poem is too abstract. It needs concrete images and metaphors to allow it to show feelings. It reads like a letter to the editor on a political issue. Poems need to show intent by creating feelings in the reader. Don’t be so logical and denotative in presentation.
